MBACS employs a Director of School and Community Relations who focuses on fostering strong relationships within the neighborhoods we serve. We recruit students within the community through conversations with our community partners and presence at local businesses. At times, elementary and middle schools request that we speak with their students about our middle and high school offerings. Our counselors attend SDP’s annual high school fair (now sponsored by the Philadelphia School Partnership), and we have also participated in the Great Philly Schools’ “School Choice Night” at the Philadelphia Kroc Center.
MBACS is participating in the Apply Philly Charter online application system for the 2021-2022 enrollment season.
How the application is publicized to parents, students, and the community
Our application and admissions timeline are posted on our website. MBACS uses Facebook, Twitter, school website, flyers, email, auto phone dialer to announce application availability and deadlines. We also advertise via local and city-wide newspapers such as the Fishtown Star, Spirit, and Metro. The enrollment application is available to the public for four consecutive months.
How the application is made available to parents, students, and community members
MBACS is participating in the Apply Philly Charter online application system for the 2021-2022 school year. All applications must be submitted online at applyphillycharter.org.
Lottery process, including date, time, location, and method
Student applications received by January 25, 2021 will be entered into our lottery. Families who have applied prior to the deadline receive both an automatic phone message and email reminding them of the lottery date prior to the lottery.
Any application received after the January 25, 2021 deadline, or that is not drawn during the lottery, will be placed on our waiting list. The 2021-2022 lottery will be held at MBACS on February 10, 2021 at 9:00 am. Students not admitted through the lottery will be placed on a randomly generated waiting list. Any applications submitted after the lottery will automatically be placed on the waiting list in the order they are received. Letters will be sent home to parents/guardians indicating their child’s place on the waiting list.
Parent and student notification of lottery results
Lottery results will be sent via email (when available) or by first class mail on or before February 12, 2021 and include students’ status (i.e., accepted or wait listed). If a child is wait listed, his/her place on the waiting list will be included in the letter. A phone message will also be sent to all applicants alerting them that decisions are being mailed.
Documentation and actions required to complete student enrollment process
If a child’s application is drawn during the lottery, the parent/guardian will be required to submit proof of the child’s date of birth, proof of residency from the current year, immunization records, affirmation statement, and a home language survey to MBACS by March 12, 2021 to secure the child’s place. This deadline is listed on the school’s website and to all communications sent to parents.
In addition to the required documents, MBACS also requests that parents complete an enrollment packet. The enrollment packet will be sent to all students once they have been accepted, and includes:
Introductory Letter to Parents/Guardians
Demographic Information Sheet
Charter School Student Enrollment Notification Form
Emergency Information and Treatment Form
Home Language Survey
Request for Records
Evidence of Enrollment
Photo Release Form
Pennsylvania Information Management Systems (PIMS) Form
Proof of Residency
Proof of Age (Birth Certificate, Baptismal Records)
Report Card or Transcripts (to verify grade placement)
If a parent is unable to secure all documents in the enrollment packet prior to March 12, 2021, the child’s place can be secured by contacting MBACS and indicating their intent to enroll. If a child’s enrollment packet is not received by the deadline and parent notification of intent has not been made, MBACS makes at least two attempts to contact the parent prior to moving a child to the waiting list. MBACS does not delay enrollment if a missing document is not required by law.
